There have been several subplots in the build-up to Conor McGregor’s bout with Floyd Mayweather next week in Las Vegas. The undefeated boxer is attempting to stretch his record to 50-0, as the UFC champion makes his professional boxing debut.
With McGregor crossing over from MMA, there have been several suggestions how the conditions could be made more in his favour. One such ruling that was suggested was decreasing the glove sizes from 10oz to 8oz for the fight, making it more similar to MMA.
It was Mayweather who initially suggested the move, during their world media tour, and the notion gathered momentum in recent weeks.
Today, the Nevada Athletic Commission made a decision on the matter, after an official application was made.
NAC commissioner Skip Avansino proposes a “one-fight exception” to allow 8oz gloves due to the unusual circumstances of Mayweather-McGregor.

Unless they throw us a curve, NAC seems to be leaning towards 8 oz. Honestly thought this was a Mayweather publicity stunt, but here we are.

Reminded of @coachowenroddy saying last wk that Mayweather has made mistakes w/ this move (& others). Will this come back to haunt him?

Chairman Marnell: I do not like the NAC being used as a pawn in a social media battle. Frankly, that part of it, it pisses me off.

However, despite doubt lingering over whether it would be passed, the news was finally confirmed, after the NAC unanimously voted for a one-fight exception.
Wow, it actually happened. #MayweatherMcGregor will be contested with 8oz gloves rather than 10oz. One-fight exception. It’s official.
