In the fight game we never truly know what is right around the corner.
Who would have ever thought we would see the showdown between boxing and mixed martial arts respective biggest stars in Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor which took place in August?
That unprecedented and monumental event was a spectacle which had the entire world watching and talking. In fact, Mayweather vs. McGregor is still a talking point fight fans and pundits alike won’t let go.
The undefeated boxing legend cruised to a tenth-round TKO victory over his Irish opponent having lost the opening three rounds as he assessed the style and power of McGregor, who was making his professional boxing debut.
While Floyd has insisted he is officially retired with the perfect record of 50-0, there has been constant speculation that he will return to fight again in order to collect one of the ginormous paycheques he has been accustomed to collecting throughout the years. One such mooted payday is a four-fight MMA contract with the UFC which would see the American earn a whopping $1 billion.
Dana White stated earlier this week that the UFC were in talks with team Mayweather about striking up an out-of-left-field deal to bring the 41-year-old across to the world of MMA. However, Floyd has since denied the rumours and announced he will not be competing again in any shape or form.
Well, while the venture would certainly prove to be one of the biggest talking points in combat sports history should it come to fruition despite Floyd’s claims, the rumours will undoubtedly continue to rumble on for some time.
Chael Sonnen has given his analysis on the subject in a clip posted to his personal YouTube account and ‘The American Gangster’ sees no way Mayweather will remain retired into the future. Be it the rumoured switch to MMA after over 20 years as a boxer or a return to the boxing ring, Sonnen is adamant we will see Floyd compete again. He gives the reasoning that ‘Money’ Mayweather is an over exaggerated character and that his reported net worth is blown out of proportion.
Floyd will be back to earn one of the aforementioned healthy paydays, in the ring or maybe even in the Octagon, if we are to believe Chael.
