Sonny Bill Williams has not boxed since January 2015 due to concentrating on both his Sevens career and then the Lions Tour.
However, the 31-year-old has now confirmed he will enter the ring once again in a highly-anticipated bout with rugby league player Paul Gallen.
Williams’ promoter Khoder Nasser has confirmed to the Syndey Morning Herald that the two camps have finally agreed to a fight and the only stumbling block that remains is deciding where it will be shown.
Gallen is the captain of NRL side Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks and has 32 caps for the Australian rugby league side. He also boasts a very impressive record as a boxer with 7 wins from 7 attempts, three of which came by knockout.
Sonny Bill has been in the news very frequently in recent weeks following his four-match ban for a dangerous tackle on Lions winger Anthony Watson. All Blacks coach Steve Hansen had hoped to have his star centre available for the Bledisloe Cup clash next month but it now seems he will likely miss out.
There is no word as of yet as to when the fight will take place. The promoters are set to enter talks with streaming company Stan as they look to secure a deal to broadcast the fight exclusively. Excitement for the event is already steadily building in the southern hemisphere.
