Amir Khan Signs Matchroom Deal And Confirms Date For Ring Return

Former unified light-welterweight world boxing champion Amir Khan has announced he has signed a deal with Matchroom Boxing and confirmed he will return to the ring on April 21.

Khan hasn’t fought since suffering a sixth-round knockout defeat, in a middleweight world title fight, to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in May 2016. That was the fourth defeat of his career, and third knockout and many questioned whether his boxing days were over.

Since then, he has had surgery to repair a hand injury and appeared on a reality TV show which increased the rumours of his in-ring career coming to an end.

However, after leaving the jungle, he made it clear that a ring return was in the pipeline.

In December, Khan revealed he was eager to return to the ring and he then said a shocking announcement was imminent earlier this month.

That announcement has now been made, with the Bolton fighter burying the hatchet with promoter Eddie Hearn and signing a three-fight deal with Matchroom.

In the past, Khan has spoken of his dislike for Hearn. But, it seems that any bad blood between them has been put aside for now.

Khan announced the deal, his return date of April 21, and a photo of himself and Hearn, on his Twitter account.

He also spoke about the decision, and his determination to become world champion again, telling Sky Sports:

“I’m thrilled to be teaming up with Matchroom. This decision is not one I’ve taken lightly, as I’m at a hugely important time in my career, but having spoken to Eddie at length, it was clear he and I were on the same page in terms of what I want to be doing and what I still want to achieve.

“I’m determined to win another world championship and I’m confident I’ve got the right team behind me to help me do so.

“Just as important a factor was the opportunity to fight in the UK for the first time in five years, and to do so with the support of the British fans and Sky Sports behind me.

“British boxing is in such a good place and I genuinely can’t wait to get back in that ring with the incredible home support behind me.

“I’ve been out of the ring for too long, and I’m desperate to make up for lost time, starting in April.

It is as yet unknown who Khan’s opponent will be, but Hearn has confirmed he will be looking to secure a blockbuster fight for his new signing in the winter.
