The Secret Olympian On Dedication, Sacrifice And Forgoing A ‘Normal’ Life

The Secret Olympian reveals the sacrifices required to make it to the top.

This game is my life. It is not for everybody and I understand that. To get to where I have got to, to become an Olympian, I have dedicated my life to the sport of boxing. It has made me who I am today. I have done the early mornings, I have done the late nights, I have given up things that young people my age take for granted in their lives.

There have been lonely times and there have been fun times, but I wouldn’t change anything that has happened to me for the world. Every time I step into the ring, be it for a sparring session or for a fight, I give everything I have and try and improve myself as a fighter and a person.

Growing up, I wouldn’t have had what could be described as a ‘normal’ life – when people my age are going out partying, I have been either boxing or thinking about boxing. When I am in training camp, I become a recluse. I stay at home and don’t do much aside from focusing on my training and preparation. This is what works for me and this is the power within that has led me to where I am today, preparing to compete in the 2016 Olympic Games.

Friendships become clearer during these times. You will lose some, but the real friends will be there for you. Even though I am at an age where people all around me are enjoying themselves to the fullest, I find different enjoyment and fulfilment from my own direction. My real friends understand that you can’t sit side by side with them at parties all the time because you need to reach inside yourself and find that extra fraction of a percentage that can be the difference between winning and losing.

When I win a gold medal in Rio and I have proven myself to be the best, everything I have done and sacrificed will be worthwhile.

This is the first in a three-part series of articles, in which the Olympian will also talk about preparation, what it means to compete at the games, the controversial rule-change that will allow professionals to compete and much more. The series will be followed by a video revealing the identity of the athlete.
