Well, this was certainly a moment that Michael Buffer will hope to forget…
Michael Buffer is undoubtedly the most highly regarded and well-known announcer in the realm of boxing. However, it seems that even the great Buffer is prone to the odd blunder and, last weekend, he made a whopper.
After a spectacular flyweight bout that was broadcast from the Stubhub Center in Carson, California, Buffer collected the judges’ scorecards and took to the centre of the ring to announce the winner.
However, despite the fact that the fight was between Juan Francisco Estrada and Carlos Cuadras, the veteran announcer bellowed out that a non-existent “Carlos Estrada” had won the fight via unanimous decision.
Huge confusion followed as Carlos Cuadras took the announcement to mean that he was victorious while Juan Francisco Estrada and his team looked around the ring in baffled confusion.
Being broadcast live on HBO, a sense of panic immediately set in before one of the judges scrambled to inform Buffer of who the actual winner of the bout was.
