During Showtime’s brilliant ‘The Reveal’, in which Mark Kriegel interviews Carl Frampton as well as the Belfast boxer’s once and future foe Leo Santa Cruz, Kriegel references the fact that Irish boxing great Barry McGuigan considers Frampton to be his fourth son.
“Maybe he see’s a little bit of himself in me,” says Frampton, when Kriegel asks why that is.
Whatever the reason, it’s pretty clear from this recently released Sky Sports promo for Frampton vs Santa Cruz 2 that McGuigan’s connection with the 29-year-old featherweight is indeed more like a familial one than the average manager/fighter relationship.
The short promo features footage captured at ringside during Frampton’s gripping first bout with Santa Cruz back in July of 2016, footage which shows that ‘The Clones Cyclone’ was working up quite a sweat while watching his protege, who is also trained by his middle son Shane, battle the tough Mexican for 12 rounds.
It’s an emotional piece all around, as it also focuses on Santa Cruz’s father and trainer, Jose. The elder Santa Cruz worked his son’s corner for the bout, but he had been absent for most of the camp due to the fact that he was battling cancer.
Thankfully, Jose is now cancer free and looking forward to helping his son attempt to avenge the majority decision defeat he suffered in Brooklyn last year.
This is obviously not a high-energy hype video, but we are sure that it will draw you in.
Frampton vs Santa Cruz 2 takes place on Saturday night, January 28th, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It will be aired by Showtime in the U.S and Sky Sports in the U.K & Ireland.
Featuring the two best featherweights on the planet and a style match-up that simply can’t fail to deliver, this one is not to be missed.
