And The Secret Olympian Is…

The suspense is at an end, as we finally unveil the identity of our Secret Olympian.

Over the last few weeks we have featured a series of articles from a mystery man within the Irish Olympic boxing setup for Rio 2016. The Secret Olympian has written about the dedication and sacrifice that has taken him to heights as lofty as the host city’s famous Christ the Redeemer statue. He has detailed the rigorous nature of the team’s recent training camp in Azerbaijan and the mood that it created within the team. Finally, he delivered a message of unerring confidence in spite of the news that professionals will be allowed to compete at these games.

The series painted a portrait of a man with intense focus and an unbreakable self-belief. But you would expect nothing less from a world champion.

That’s right, the Secret Olympian is none other than Michael Conlan.

A bronze medallist at London 2012 and the winner of the 2015 World Championships, Conlan will head to Rio as one of the favourites to secure gold in the bantamweight division.

Ahead of his trip, however, Conlan has teamed up with Electric Ireland, the sponsors of Team Ireland for Rio 2016, to create a fantastic new 360 degree video which attempts to simulate the sensation of being in the ring with an Olympic boxer.

Speaking of the unique concept Conlan said: “I’m often asked what it’s like to be in the ring, sparring with an opponent and now you can put yourself in that position to get a feel for what it’s like.”

The 360 degree video is best viewed using a 360 headset on mobile but is also viewable through YouTube below….

Electric Ireland is the Official Energy Partner of Team Ireland for the Rio Olympics.
