He says that she definitely shouldn’t fight Amanda Serrano again…
Tony Bellew has an extremely interesting take on what Katie Taylor’s retirement fight should be.
While the overwhelming consensus seems to be that Taylor should fight Amanda Serrano again, in Ireland, Bellew believes it is too much of a risk.
He heaped praise on Taylor and her entire career, but said that she deserves the chance to walk off into the sunset with an easy win in front of 80,000 fans at Croke Park.
He seems to think that fighting Serrano would be too much of a risk, and that instead, Taylor should fight a debutant.
He did also add that Taylor would sell out Croke Park regardless of the opponent, if it was to be sold as her retirement fight.
Tony Bellew on Katie Taylor
He said: “She’s the perfect role model for young women out there, the way she carries herself and the things she says.
“She fights for her country, she’s the pride of Ireland and she’s absolutely amazing. I can’t speak highly enough of her.”
He said: “It’s not my place to tell her what to do or even suggest. But if I was her, I would walk off into the sunset.
“I do understand the lure of wanting to fight at home in that big stadium and she deserves it more than anyone.
“I would have the homecoming fight with a debutant in the other corner. She’s got the power to do it. Take the easiest possible fight and go out with a knockout in the first 20 minutes.”
While it might not be a bad idea, Taylor has never done things the easy way throughout her career, and she’s unlikely to start now.
Bellew also said that what Taylor has done for women’s boxing is comparable to what the Williams sisters have done for tennis. More on that here.
