With Michael Conlan, Katie Taylor, TJ Doheny and a host of other talented boxers thriving, it’s a very special time to be a part of Irish boxing.
On Sunday night, the Irish take centre stage once again at Madison Square Garden as Conlan defends his newly won WBO Inter-Continental featherweight title against Ruben Hernandez-Garcia, while Paddy Barnes looks to bounce back from defeat against Texan Oscar Mojica in a six-rounder at bantamweight.
Irish eyes will be fixed on the world’s most famous arena with Conlan headlining and his teammate Barnes also on the card which takes place on St Patrick’s Day.
With Katie Taylor dominating the female boxing scene and Portlaoise’s TJ Doheny also a world champion at super-bantamweight, Conlan feels that there is a now lot of attention on Irish boxers, with the sport “thriving” in the country.
“I think Irish boxing is thriving at the moment,” said Conlan speaking exclusively to Pundit Arena.
“It’s going really really well. There are fighters, fighting all over the world, even back home it’s going really good for us. So I feel we’re in a really good position.
“I feel boxing, in general, has gone up another level, in terms of popularity and how much people are interested in it now. I think it’s great for all us, especially in Ireland.
“There’s an awful lot to talk about in Ireland, there’s a lot of attention for it in Ireland. I think we’re very very lucky now. “
Conlan also spoke about his happiness at having close friend and teammate Paddy Barnes on the same card for the first time in his professional career.
“It’s fantastic,” said Conlan.
“Paddy is a brilliant teammate of mine and has been for many many years.
“We haven’t actually got to share a card yet as professionals but this will be fantastic to have him on my undercard in Madison Square Garden, I know he’s been dying to, so the fact that he’s doing it in the garden is fantastic.”
Michael Conlan also spoke to Pundit Arena about his relationship with Conor McGregor as well as his desire to fight Vladimir Nikitin in Belfast later this summer.
Our full exclusive interview with Conlan will be available on site on Friday, March 15th.
