Ireland’s boxers have their first gold medal at the 2019 European Games in Minsk thanks to Kurt Walker who clinched victory in the bantamweight division.
Walker defeated Ukranian boxer Mykolo Butsenko via a unanimous decision having previously beaten British rival and number one seed Peter McGrail on Saturday.
The victory is a massive boost for Ireland who disappointingly saw gold medal hopeful, Kellie Harrington, withdraw from her lighweight final with a thumb injury, meaning she had to settle for silver.

Walker’s gold adds a fifth medal to Team Ireland’s haul in Minsk with Regan Buckley and Grainne Walsh claiming bronze medals while Michaela Walsh and Harrington both claimed silver medals.
The 24-year old was understandably ecstatic following the win which Walker can add to his silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia last year.
