Ireland’s Katie Taylor made history last night as she defeated Delfine Persoon to become the undisputed lightweight champion of the world.
Taylor clinched the WBC belt to add to the WBA, IBF and WBO in what was unquestionably the toughest fight of her career against the hard-hitting Belgian.
The bout was incredibly close with some feeling that Persoon, who hadn’t been defeated in nine years previous to Saturday night, had done enough to secure the upset victory.
One official at Madison Square Garden scored the contest 95-95 with the other two judges having it 96-95 in Taylor’s favour as she edged out the win.
