Michael Conlan has captured the WBO Inter-Continental featherweight title.
The vacant belt was up for grabs in Manchester as Conlan took on Jason Cunningham of Doncaster.
Ultimately, the Olympic silver medallist won the fight in a unanimous decision blowout. The judges at ringside scored the fight 97-92, 97-92 and 98-92, including a points deduction in round six for Conlan due to low blows.
The 27-year-old really went for the finish late on, but a decision over ten rounds will have to suffice.
It’s evident that punching power is a frontier that the Irish favourite is looking to address, and while he shipped some hits from Cunningham in the process of chasing a knockout, Conlan is still finding his feet on the world stage.
He moves to 10-0 in his professional career and is now primed for a huge 2019 with more belts sure to be on the line.
