It didn’t long for the former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux to get his man out of there as he TKO’d Spike O’Sullivan in round one.
Sometimes it just doesn’t go your way and to be honest, it was a tough night at the office for Cork’s Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan.
Facing fearsome puncher David Lemieux, O’Sullivan was pressured from the getgo, eating hard shots from his Canadian adversary before leaving himself open for a devastating left-hand in the final minute of round one.
It was certainly a bitter pill for Spike to swallow given the heated nature of the fight’s buildup but also because he knew that a win over Lemieux would earn him a shot at the winner of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.
Of course, it was the Mexican Canelo who came out on top in that one. It’s unclear whether Lemieux will be considered for his first title-defense but seeing as the fight between him and Spike was officially ruled to be a title-eliminator, who knows!
For O’Sullivan, it’s back to the drawing board indeed, but as we’ve seen in the past, he is more than capable of recapturing his momentum after a setback.
