Eddie Hearn has confirmed that he is interested in making an immediate rematch between Andy Ruiz Jr. and Anthony Joshua following last night’s shocking seventh-round TKO victory for the Mexican.
If 2019 provides a greater shock to the system than the one we witnessed in Madison Square Garden last night, it will come as one helluva surprise.
Ruiz managed to record one of the biggest championship-level upset victories the heavyweight division has ever known, beating the heavily favoured Anthony Joshua by way of seventh-round stoppage in the night’s top-billed attraction.
Joshua, who is, of course, a massive star in England, was fighting for the first time on US soil but was a regular stadium-filler in his home-country.
Given his athleticism, power, and unbeaten record, few, if any, would have guessed how things were going to play out and when all was said and done, there was the feeling that we had just witnessed something special.
Now, according to promoter Eddie Hearn, the fight will be run back this winter.
Hearn spoke directly after the fight, giving props to the victorious underdog who became the first Mexican heavyweight to ever win the title while also promising that Joshua would eventually make his return, telling the media the following:
“We’ll make the rematch in the UK in November/December, but tonight is all about Andy Ruiz.
‘Now we’ll see what AJ is about. He’s got the heart of a lion, I’m sure he’ll come back.
‘Now we know what fight is next, and we’ll see a huge rematch at the end of the year.
‘Maybe this is what he needs. He’ll have another shot at Ruiz later but he needs to win, it’s a must win fight for him now.”
