Pernell Whitaker, one of the greatest boxers of his generation, was killed last night after having been struck by a car in Virginia Beach.
It’s a truly dark day for the sport of boxing as one of the greatest talents to have ever laced up gloves sadly passes away.
Whitaker, 55, who was described by his fellow legend Floyd Mayweather as one of the five greatest to ever do it, was struck by a vehicle while crossing the road near Virginia Beach on Sunday night and later died from his injuries.
The daughter of ‘Sweet Pea’, Dominique, gave the following statement upon revealing the unfortunate news.
“To everyone please respect my family’s privacy in this trying moment.
“I want to inform people that today we lost a legend truly one of boxing’s greatest pound-for-pound champions, my father Pernell ‘Sweet Pea’ Whitaker.”
Whitaker was a champion across four different weight-classes ranging from lightweight to light-middleweight and amassed a record of 40-4-1 before retiring in 2001.
