A brilliant day for Irish boxing.
Amy Broadhurst and Lisa O’Rourke combined to secure two gold medals for Ireland at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship’s in Istanbul on Thursday evening.
Dundalk native Broadhurst saw past Algerian opponent Imane Khelif with a unanimous decision success, following the likes of Michael Conlan, Katie Taylor and Kellie Harrington in claiming World Championship gold for Ireland.
And remarkably, Broadhurst was joined by O’Rourke minutes later, who defeated Mozambique boxer Alcinda Helena after Ireland’s first gold of the day.

Amy Broadhurst secures World Championship gold for Ireland.
Following a tight, and tense first round, Broadhurst stunned her Algerian foe with a dominant performance and win.
Incredibly, the Dundalk native’s previous best showing at a World Championship only saw her reach the quarter-final, and she is also a former European Championship silver medalist.
After securing her win, she also picked up a cool financial reward of $100,000 for her efforts, which was also received by O’Rourke in her bout against Helena.

Meanwhile, O’Rourke added the gloss to a memorable day for the Irish in Istanbul, as she battled past the game challenge of Helena.
Hailing from the Castlerea Boxing Club in Roscommon, O’Rourke came into the contest with good pedigree, but was able to battle past the Mozambique boxer in a fairly tight encounter.
