Celebration as Ciara Mageean smashes Sonia O’Sullivan’s national mile record

An incredible run from Ciara Mageean in Monaco has seen her break the Irish record.

County Down’s Ciara Mageean has finished second in the women’s mile at the Diamond League in Monaco after clocking a national record time of 4.14.58.

Irish running legend Sonia O’Sullivan held the record before today – a record which stood since 1994 – but Mageean knocked more than 2.5 seconds off the Cork woman’s time with a fantastic run.

Some are calling it the greatest women’s mile run in history as five of the top six set national records with their run times.

Joy for Mageean after incredible mile race.

Behind Mageean were Laura Muir with 4:15.24 for the British record, Jessica Hull with 4:15.34 for the Australian record and Nikki Hiltz with 4:16.35 for the American record.

And she was only beaten by the truly phenomenal Faith Kipyegon, who smashed Sifan Hassan’s world record with a remarkable time of 4:07.64.

The Kenyan is considered one of the world’s greatest track athletes, and by beating Mageean broke her third world record in the space of two months.

Back in June she managed to lower both the 1500m and 5000m world records on consecutive Fridays and it took a similarly stunning run to outpace the City of Lisburn member at this evening’s event.

Irish athletes perform at Diamond League.

Earlier today, Tallaght AC’s Rhasidat Adeleke finished fourth in the 400m event in what was her first ever appearances at the Diamond League.

Adeleke, 20, only announced her decision to turn professional in recent days and is tipped to have a huge future ahead of her after enjoying success on the amateur circuit.

One of her believers are clothing brand Nike who signed her as an ambassador four days ago, shortly after her decision to turn pro was made public.

Sarah Lavin, meanwhile, finished seventh in the Women’s 100m Hurdles. With a time of 12.74, she was just 0.01 seconds short of her personal record.
