20-year-old Dubliner Conor Masterson is in the Liverpool squad for Sunday’s visit of Manchester United at Anfield.
Masterson has been elevated into the senior squad as a result of the defensive injury crisis which is currently engulfing the Merseyside club; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are all unavailable.
This leaves the only fit centre-backs as Virgil van Dijk and Dejan Lovren which means that Masterson will likely get a place on the bench for Sunday’s eagerly-anticipated clash.
Since the start of November when Masterson returned from injury, he has been a mainstay of the U23’s defence. He was also on the bench for last season’s Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City.
Liverpool enter a busy period where they will play five matches in 18 days so Masterson’s first-team debut could take place over the coming weeks.
